Although we recommend regular Mazda service to maintain the health of your car, knowing how to fix a car battery can be beneficial, especially during an emergency. The expertly trained technicians at our Mazda Service Center are prepared to handle all your maintenance and repair needs. So, on behalf of our Mazda Service tips, let's look at how to jump-start your car battery.
1. Find a Booster Vehicle
Once you discover your battery is dead, you'll want to contact someone with a working battery. If you don’t have your own set of jumper cables, ask your new booster friend. Ensure the working vehicle faces bumper to bumper with the other car, both have their emergency brake enabled, and turn off any accessories. The cars should be close enough so the jumper cables can reach each battery.
2. Connect Cables
Once you've accessed each vehicle, locate the battery terminals in each car. Connect the red clamp to the dead battery's positive terminal and attach the other end to the positive terminal of the volunteer battery. Then, connect the black jumper cable to the negative battery terminal to the volunteer battery and connect the other end to an unpainted metal surface, such as the engine block, to ground it into the dead battery.
3. Start Your Engines
After connecting the cables, start the booster vehicle and let it run for a few minutes. Then, try to start the engine with the dead battery. If it ignites, let it run for at least 15 minutes. Disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order and you should be ready to roll!
