For the unprepared, catching a flat tire on the road can be an inconvenient and scary experience — fortunately, this simple Mazda service guide will get you back on your way in no time! Courtesy of Blaise Alexander Mazda State College, here’s how to change a flat tire on your vehicle.

Pull Over Safely

Changing a flat tire requires a safe, level patch of ground. As soon as you notice that you’ve got a flat, pull your vehicle over to the shoulder, safely away from traffic and other dangers. You’ll then want to get the tools needed to change your tire: a jack, lug wrench or tire iron, and spare tire. These tools should be located in your trunk or cargo area.

Remove the Flat

First, you’ll use your lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire, but don’t remove them just yet. Place the jack under a solid piece of the vehicle’s frame and raise the car about six inches off the ground. Next, remove the lug nuts all the way and pull the flat tire directly away from the vehicle to remove it.

Put on the Spare

Slip the spare tire over the studs, with the air valve facing you. Use the wrench or tire iron to reattach the lug nuts to the same points on the tire — but don’t tighten them all the way until you’ve lowered the car back to the ground. Once the jack has been lowered and removed, you can tighten the lug nuts, put away the flat and your tools, and head to Blaise Alexander Mazda State College or your nearest Mazda service department!
